AN EX-UNION SOLDIER ATTEMPTS TO SOLVE A MURDER AS POST CIVIL WAR DIVISIONS THREATEN TO TEAR A COMMUNITY APART
"Hal Reames walks the reader back into the heart of the American Civil War, let by his amiable ex-slave raconteur, Bernard, who knows the heart is a 'more personal organ.' "-Michael Wolfe, author of the Hadj, Invisible Weapons and The Conversion of Henry IV.
Thomas, a "free-thinking" ex-union soldier from Kansas migrates west and is building a schoolhouse for a friend's sister. A wagon train brings Amos, a former rebel who is now pastor to Texan Baptists. The murder of a child threatens to tear the town in two; and northerner and southerner, believer and non-believer, must form a partnership to hold it together. To prove poisoning and explain the killer's apparent ability to be in two places at once, the evidence-seeking skeptic must undertake a quest to Denver. An eccentric chemist in Central City will first teach him the Marsh Test for arsenic and then warn him that the grave of the murder's accomplice might lie empty. The secretary for the defense attorney shows the detective how a union of opposites can make a home under one roof.
"...wit and originality shine through... I always look forward to a Hal Reames book."-Phoebe Fox, author of The Breakup Doctor.
"...A fun read and thoroughly satisfying...issues we as a nation are still dealing with today. You'll enjoy the read."-Darrell Bryant, author of Geronimo's Bones.
"...a work of literature...tells a story and...reveals eternal truths about the human condition."-Ana Cecilia Carvalho, author of O Livro Neurotico de Receitas (The Neurotic Book of Recipes); Uma mulher, outra mulher (One Woman, Another Woman). "...relationships and some of his dialogues as interesting as the mystery and post-war conflicts."-John Jones Asher, author of A Dignified Exit, Dogs of Mexico, and other works.

This book is excellent! The story is great and it’s difficult to put the book down. The mystery starts in the Prologue. In Denver, 1885, an old man called Bernard is talking to a young man that is making notes of what he says. Bernard says to him “Well, the mystery really started when that dog died.” And the young man became curious about what dog was Bernard talking about. Bernard starts to tell him a story that happened in Cañon City, CO, in 1865. It involves the most intriguing and well imagined characters. In the introduction of each chapter, Bernard makes comments about the story to the young man, who is still curious and taking notes besides asking questions, and continues narrating the story. Many new interesting characters appear and the story becomes each time more appealing to the reader. The author is clever, talented, intelligent, and knows how to create a wonderful plot. I give 5 stars to this book because there are not 10 stars. A must read book, without question.Product details

The Great Divide edition by Hal Reames Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book deserves attention. A story told in such an inventive way. A mystery set after the Civil War that addresses issues relevant today. It is abundant but quiet, well researched but accessable, both violent and tender. Read it and once you have finished, you'll long for a sequel.
The story is something of a Western detective story / morality tale. It has a bit for everyone courtroom drama, detective work, some romance and violence. It's a relevant story, as well, since it's really about how and whether a nation comes together not only as a state of law, but as a people. The conflict plays out between north and south, bloodthirsty capitalists and homesteaders, and a preacher and an agnostic scientist.
Murder and mystery combined with interesting, well-drawn characters. In this post Civil War drama set in Colorado, a man moves into a small frontier town who seems to have to ability to be in two places at once—just as mysterious deaths begin to take place.
I can always tell when I've finished a really good book, because it takes me a long while to find something else that holds my interest. I haven't found anything yet since saying "good-bye" to Thomas and Mary and, of course, Horace. What happens next? Does he continue ridding the West of varmints? Does Horace like his new stable mate? This is one book I will not loan to someone else to read. There are so many divides suggested and inferred and stated outright that I'll no doubt need to read it again. But I have a list of reading exchange friends to whom I will certainly talk it up.
