I've seen it many times. People without any leadership or management training are good at what they do and are promoted to a leadership position. But the skills that allowed them to be great at their work are not necessarily the same that allow them to be great as leaders or managers. And without any support or training, these otherwise excellent workers flounder. Miller explains why this is a costly mistake and how to avoid it. Written for business owners and senior management, this book explains clearly and succinctly the key importance of what the author calls "first level supervisors", that is, the first line of management in any company. It also explains what to do to build a valuable workforce of supervisors that will support the goals and mission of the company or organization, and help rally and bolster the employees. The book's concise and to the point style was refreshing and easy to read. The author draws from long experience working in the US army and later privately training companies. This book should be recommended reading for business owners and senior management.Product details

Winning the War for Profit Developing Leaders Where It Really Matters eBook Penny Miller Reviews
I own 2 companies. I have a consulting engineering firm and a real estate investing company. The key to being succesful at each of these businesses (like most businesses) is to hire and employ great managers to do the day to day work. This allows my time to work on the business and not in it. Which makes it easier to scale each one of the companies. This book cuts right to the chase and lays out on exactly how to manage this effort. I highly recommend this book to all business owners or anyone in management for that matter. Great job by this author for putting on paper and making it easy to read, follow and execute what you need to do.
A good book on the fundamentals to start supervisor development and how to evaluate your training. I would recommend to any organization with supervisors. 5 stars because it is believable and doable.
Penny's direct style focuses on the basics, efficiently imparting the "must do", "how" and "why". She also she shares the importance of Coaching and Measurements to grow people.
If you want easy to follow techniques on how to train leaders in a team, then you must read this book. The insights into creating productive and inspiring leaders are expertly described. The author clearly wanted a no-fluff narrative, and that is what you get! It is simple enough to be followed without difficulty, but certainly some very worthwhile tips in here. A definite must-have for any business!
Penny Miller is a trainer's trainer. She is focused and honest about the things that work. Penny works with management groups around the area to help them understand the importance of their middle managers and supervisors to their companys' success. This book is a good composite of theory and techniques which have proven successful from company to company.
We don't spend enough time training first line supervisors. Most of the time and money in companies is spent on middle and top management in companies. Penny does a great job of talking about what front line supervisors need to be successful. It is really where the rubber meets the road, or where the profit in any organization is. It's on the front line that companies get the most bang for their buck—that is where the real work is happening. From making the transition to building trust, Penny does a great job of highlight what is important for supervisors to know.
Engaged and well managed employees can improve profits up to 48%. But the trick is getting there.
There are many items on the plate of business owners, so what to pay attention to?
Penny Miller delivers a critical pathway to understanding the issues, and clear tools for moving forward.
I would say the greatest attribute of this document is its ability to cut to the critical issues and offer processes for taking immediate and effective action.
