Indomitable Spirit Kim Munro 9780956443502 Books Reviews
Great book for any age about how to overcome hardships and how to utilize actions to make your life better. Good for all ages and particularly for young Karate students who can see how this skill can be used to make you a better person. Good for seeing how training can change outcomes and your insite to become a better person. Also in assisting other people in your life with things you learn through the dicipline of the dojo. Interesting...good reading for any age person interested in karate.
This book is...well, it's a book. Technically and mechanically, it is difficult to read. If there was an editor for this project, he needs to go back to grammar school, as there are misspellings and grammatical errors on literally every page from the beginning to the end.
On the whole, the storyline was not very original (it reminded me of something you would have seen in an 80's karate/action film), but it was enjoyable. People studying karate might find this fun and inspiring, but if the story was intended for children, it certainly missed its mark. That is, the plot is relatively simple and the general message would be great for kids, but the amount of "adult" content makes it very difficult to recommend for a younger audience. The dialogue is rife with profanity and the plot involves illegal drug use as well as a "bed scene", just to name a few of the reasons why this book should not be categorized as "children's literature". According to the guidelines for movies, this would have a PG-13 label on it at best, I'm afraid.
So, parents, if you read the other review, please consider this one as well, and at the very least consider reading it yourself before handing it to your youngster. Otherwise, you may have a lot of things to explain to him...
